Algonquin - Firefighter's Memorial
I-BeamThe memorial is to honor two Algonquin Firefighters who died in the line of duty, as well as to pay tribute to the victims of 9-11. The memorial is situated in downtown Algonquin and includes a 5,000-pound steel beam from the former World Trade Center in New York City. A 40-feet-diameter brick paver with landscaping circulates this donation for The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey,

Carpentersville - Firefighter 9/11 MemorialThe memorial features a center monument holding a brass fire helmet, a base pierced by beams from the World Trade Center, and a plaque dedicated to the firefighters who served Carpentersville and to those people who lost their lives on Sept. 11. A flagpole is next to the center monument, flanked by wo stone monuments displaying the Fireman's Prayer and the Last Alarm poem.

Darien-Woodridge FPD 9-11 Memorial


MemorialOn the 10th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks, the Darien-Woodridge FPD dedicated a permanent 9-11 memorial in front of their headquarters. Its design was collaborative effort by members of the Fire District. The centerpiece on top of a white pedestal is a three-foot steel I-beam recovered from the ruins of the World Trade Center.

Des Plaines - 9-11 Memorial


Des Plaines 9-11 MemorialSeptember 11, 2011, 10 years after the 9-11-01 attack, the City of Des Plaines unveiled a 9-11 memorial consisting of a 114-pound steel girder that was part of the north tower of the World Trade Center, resting on a grey pedestal. A plaque below the girder mentions that the memorial is "dedicated to those who lost their lives that day."

Des Plaines - Ridgewood Cemetery 9-11 Memorial
9-11 artifactIn 2011, at the 10th anniversary of the tragedy, a 6-foot-long, 4-inch-wide steel remnant of the World Trade Center towers was incorporated into an existing 9/11 memorial in the Ridgewood Cemetery in Des Plaines. The memorial area features granite benches looking over a lake as an invitation for quiet reflection.

"Elmhurst Remembers" Memorial
9-11 MemorialIn 2003, a 9/11 Memorial was created in Wild Meadows Trace. "The memorial features a large black granite monument engraved with a map of the U.S. with starts pinpointing the three sites where the tragic events of that day occurred. The memorial also includes a contemplation garden, benches and inscribed brick pavers."

Artifact"The damaged piece of steel was one of just 1,200 artifacts distributed by the Port Authority of New York to fire departments around the country in response to requests it had received from more than 90,000 departments. ... The item would be placed on permanent display in the vestibule of Evanston fire headquarters on Lake Street, along with a sculpture donated by Evanston artist Valerie Engel Schiff, also unveiled this morning, that is based on a photo of a firefighter still working on recovery efforts at the trade center site months after the disaster."

"COD is one of the few educational institutions in the U.S. selected to receive a relic from the Twin Towers following 9/11. The HEC has installed a permanent memorial to 9/11 that has as its focal point a ceiling beam from one of the buildings. The beam is 27" by 127" and weighs more than one thousand pounds."

Oakbrook Terrace - 9-11 Memorial in Kreml Park
On September 7, 2003, Oakbrook Terrace dedicated a memorial to the victims of 9-11 in Kreml Park. To the three-tiered, 125-gallon water fountain, an engraved plaque was added. It reads "This garden is dedicated to all Americans who were affected by the tragedy of September 11, 2001 and to provide beauty, solace and comfort to future generations.". The idea for the memorial came from twelve-year old Nick Arnold.

Oak Lawn - "Heralds of 9/11"
Oak Lawn 9-11 MemorialThe Oak Lawn Rotary commissioned Crystal Lake artist Erik Blome for a Sept. 11 tribute sculpture unveiled on the 10-year anniversary of the 9-11 tragedy. The 22-foot-tall, 2-ton sculpture incorporated four, twisted, 8-foot-tall beams from the World Trade Center, capped by two, 14-foot-tall bronze spires with each spire topped with a pair of wings of an angel. The sculpture has 30 separate sections, featuring imprints of the fallen World Trade Center, or three-dimensional faces or objects. This public art is displayed at the Oak Lawn Metra station.

Andrew Harrison has collected a 200-pound steel beam from the fallen World Trade Center, some rubble from the Pentagon and a rock from the Shanksville crash site in Pennsylvania. All three artifacts are displayed underneath an icon of St. Nicholas, at the modest-sized St. Luke the Evangelist Orthodox Church in Palos hills.

Rockford - Winnebago County 9/11 Emergency Responders Memorial
The memorial is scheduled to be completed by September 11, 2016, as a homage of all citizens and emergency responders who died on the 9-11 attacks, and also to all emergency responders who died on the line of duty serving the Winnebago County. The memorial will include two 1,000-pound steel beams, two 20-foot towers, a Pentagon-shaped platform, and 40 trees representing Flight 93's passengers.

Shiloh 9-11 Memorial"It features a pentagonal-shaped brick memorial to represent the Pentagon, and two lights on both sides for the World Trade Center's twin towers. The landscaping that surround it represents the Pennsylvania field where one of the high-jacked planes crashed that dreadful day. Each side of the memorial represents a different group of people, including police, firefighters, EMS personnel and military personnel, as well as lost loved ones."
